Teach your daughter Brazilian Jiu Jitsu

Do you teach your daughter Brazilian Jiu Jitsu? If you don’t, I recommend you do.

I started doing Brazilian Jiu Jitsu when my daughter was 2 years old, I’ve been teaching her ever since. My daughter however, started teaching me long before that.

Crocodile death roll

When she was a baby it was nigh impossible for me to change her nappy. She always did this move that I named “the crocodile death roll”.  No matter how I tried to stop her, she would just roll away. It was mind boggling.

2 years later when I started training Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, I was completely taken by surprise when the first move I was taught was “the crocodile death roll”(In Brazilian they call it “Upa”). The founders of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu obviously had children. In fact the founders, Helio & Carlos Gracie had 21 Children between them.

Triangle-choke

There’s one self defence technique that every woman should know. It’s called the triangle choke. Should you find yourself lying on your back with someone with bad intentions on top of you, just wrap your legs around their head and choke them out. It’s amazingly effective. It really doesn’t matter how big the bad guy is, he’ll be sleeping within seconds.

Sound straight-forward? It kind of is. Nonetheless it takes years of practice to make it second nature, which it has to be if it’s really going to work in anger. My goal has always been for my daughter to have a triangle-choke that is second nature by the time she starts middle school.

Sparring

Today we were in the dojo doing MMA sparring.

First I took on my 5 Year old boy. I tapped him out with a reverse triangle after about 4 minutes. It wasn’t easy but I’ve got a 55 Kg weight advantage over him and eventually I got him.

Next up was my 9 year old daughter. I swung a punch and she exploded into Seoi-Nage(The same Judo throw that injured me so badly back in 2016). I blocked the throw, me being pretty nifty and all. Then something crazy happened. She pivoted around me at lightning speed, took my back und locked in a rear-naked-choke. Not a pretend one either, I didn’t let her do it. I was feeling all big and clever for blocking the throw and the next thing you know I’m tapping out. If I were a real bad guy I’d have been out cold and eating concrete within seconds.

I was proud, very proud. There was no sloppy technique, it was all text book and at the speed of light too. With a rear-naked-choke that good, the triangle-choke is going to be awesome come school begin too.

I’m teaching my daughter Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. Are you teaching your daughter?

If you can’t do it yourself, find a good club. Judo is also great.
